A line moves. A number ticks up. Case volume, error rate, response time; whatever your team watches, it just did something it doesn’t usually do.
You see it in real time. That’s the whole point of the dashboard. It’s built to show you the moment something changes.
It is not built to tell you why.
So you go looking.
You open Jira. You check what shipped this week. You open Salesforce. You read the cases coming in, one at a time, trying to hear the pattern under the words. You open GitHub. You look for the commit that lines up with the timestamp on the chart.
The dashboard told you something changed. It didn’t tell you what changed it.
That part is still yours to find.
This is not a dashboard problem. Your dashboard is doing its job.
Dashboards are built to monitor. They watch a number and tell you when it moves. That is a narrow, well-defined task, and most dashboards do it well.
Explaining why the number moved is a different task. It requires connecting the number to a deploy, a config change, a customer segment, a timestamp three systems away. Dashboards were never built to do that. Nobody designed them to.
So the dashboard shows you the spike. And then it goes quiet. The rest is on you.

Everyone is looking at the same chart. Everyone agrees the number moved. That’s alignment; a room full of people seeing the same thing at the same time.
Alignment is not action. Knowing the number moved doesn’t tell anyone what to do next. So the meeting produces a status instead of an answer. “We’re monitoring it.” “It’s trending in the right direction.” Language built to sound like progress while the actual question, what caused this, is still unanswered.
That’s not a communication failure. It’s what a room looks like when it has visibility but not root cause. The dashboard gave everyone the same picture. Nobody in the room has the thing that would let them act on it.

The investigation that follows a spike isn’t optional and it isn’t quick. Someone has to hold the dashboard’s “what” in one hand and go looking for the “why” in three other systems. That’s hours, not minutes. And it’s hours from the person who already knows where to look, because knowing where to look is most of the skill.
More dashboards don’t fix this. A second chart doesn’t explain the first one. Adding visibility into more numbers just gives you more moments where something moved and nobody knows why yet.
